OTO - OAE Instrument

The instrument measures otoacoustic emissions (OAE), which are sounds generated by the inner ear in response to auditory stimuli. These emissions are a natural byproduct of the cochlea’s outer hair cells functioning normally.
Key Features of an OTO - OAE Instrument
Otoacoustic Emissions Measurement:
The instrument measures sounds emitted by the outer hair cells in the cochlea in response to auditory stimuli (typically clicks or tone bursts).
Early Hearing Detection:
OAE testing is used for early identification of hearing loss, especially in newborns and infants, as it can detect hearing impairments even before they manifest in behavioral signs.
Non-Invasive and Quick Testing:
Non-invasive and painless: The instrument uses a small probe inserted into the ear canal to measure emissions without causing discomfort to the patient.
Two Types of OAEs:
Spontaneous OAEs (SOAEs): These are emissions that occur without external sound stimulation, though they are less commonly tested.
Objective Measurement:
The OAE instrument provides objective data, meaning that it doesn’t rely on patient response, which is particularly valuable for non-verbal patients (e.g., infants or patients with disabilities).
Portable and Compact:
Many OAE instruments are compact and portable, making them ideal for use in mobile clinics, neonatal units, or pediatric audiology settings.
Data Storage and Connectivity:
Some models offer data storage and the ability to store or export test results for future reference, patient tracking, or integration with Electronic Health Records (EHR).
Pass/Refer Results:
The instrument typically gives a pass/refer result for each ear. A "pass" means the cochlea is functioning normally, while a "refer" result indicates a potential issue with the cochlea or hearing pathway, prompting further testing.
